Here are some famous people who didn't let their alopecia get in the way of
what they wanted to be. They lead normal lives and so can you.

Charlie Villanueva
National Basketball Association player Charlie Villanueva was diagnosed at 13 with alopecia universalis, a rare form of alopecia areata that prevents hair all over the body -- even eyebrows and nose and ear hair. Since 2005 he has participated in Charlie's Angels Meet and Greet Program; he visits people with alopecia all around the country as he travels with his NBA team, the Detroit Pistons.

Christopher Reeve
Actor Christopher Reeve developed alopecia areata at the age of 16. He hid it successfully by combing hair over his bald spots. Reeve reportedly received steroid injections every three months while playing Superman in the 1978 movie to combat symptoms of alopecia areata.

Neve Campbell
Actress Neve Campbell, of "Scream" developed alopecia when she was 23. "I was horribly
overworked and going through a divorce. Also, I had stalkers and started receiving threatening mail.
I was so distressed by it all that my hair started falling out," she said.

Bob Samuelson
Bob Samuelson starred on the U.S. Olympic volleyball team that won the bronze medal in the 1992 Summer Games, in Barcelona. His teammates shaved their heads in support of his having alopecia areata.

Mike Quade
Mike Quade, a former manager of the Chicago Cubs, was diagnosed with alopecia areata at the age
of three, according to the New York Times. When he was growing up outside Chicago, sports
became a way to become accepted by his peers, he told the paper.

Gail Porter
Gail Porter is a Scottish-born television presenter based in the U.K. Porter began suffering from alopecia areata in 2005. Her experience with the condition was the basis of "Gail Porter Laid Bare," a British Broadcasting Corporation documentary the following year. Porter refused to wear a hat or wig, instead using her appearance to raise awareness of alopecia.
